The revolutionary upheaval of 1848 generated an extraordinary volume of pattern coinage in France, as the newly proclaimed Second Republic solicited competing designs from engravers scrambling for official commissions. Alard's submission was one of dozens evaluated that year, most of which never advanced beyond tin or lead trial strikes.
