Luxembourg's wartime zinc coinage exists because German occupation authorities stripped the duchy of its copper and nickel supplies for the Reich's war industry. The LL crossed monogram variety on this essai reflects an early design iteration before the final approved type — trial pieces like this were produced in very limited numbers for official review and almost never entered circulation.
Marie-Adélaïde abdicated in 1919 under Allied pressure, accused of insufficient resistance to the occupation that necessitated these zinc issues in the first place.
