| Reverse description | Central denomination '10 CENT.' and date '1848' displayed in three lines within an open wreath of oak branches tied at the base, their leafy sprays extending symmetrically to either side. The Republican motto LIBERTÉ - ÉGALITÉ - FRATERNITÉ curves along the upper rim between beaded borders, with a small decorative stop separating each word. The overall design is bold and well-centred, characteristic of an official pattern piece. |

Eugène-André Oudiné submitted this essai amid the design competition that followed the proclamation of the Second Republic in February 1848 — a government that needed coinage quickly and held open trials rather than simply commissioning the Monnaie de Paris directly. Oudiné, already an established medallist and later chief engraver at the Paris Mint, was among several artists who competed. His entry did not win the circulating contract.
Essais of this type were struck in strictly limited numbers for evaluation purposes, never entering commerce. VG 3149 is the standard Vannier-Gadoury reference for this particular trial piece.
