The 1913 nickel essai series for French minor coinage emerged from a broader effort to reform fractional currency before the First World War disrupted everything. Pillet's submission was one of several competing trial pieces evaluated by the Monnaie de Paris that year. None advanced to circulation — the war arrived first, and post-war inflation made the centime denomination increasingly academic anyway.
