Bône (now Annaba, Algeria) issued its own emergency coinage in 1915 because the outbreak of World War I triggered an immediate hoarding crisis across French North Africa — small-denomination coins vanished from circulation almost overnight as the metropole redirected metal to wartime needs. Local chambers of commerce across Algeria were authorized to fill the gap with aluminum nécessité tokens, a stopgap that lasted well into the war years.
The Bône chamber's issues are among the more consistently encountered of the Algerian necessity coinage, but aluminum's fragility in circulation means undamaged survivors are less common than raw survival numbers suggest.
