Struck under the Husainid bey Ahmad II ibn Ali, who ruled Tunisia as a French protectorate from 1929 until his death in 1942. France had reorganized Tunisian coinage in the late nineteenth century and continued issuing coins in the bey's name well into the twentieth — a deliberate colonial fiction that maintained the appearance of local sovereignty while Paris controlled every substantive decision, including alloy choices driven by interwar metal economics rather than any local preference.
