Malakoff, a working-class commune south of Paris, issued its own aluminium token coinage during the acute small-change shortages of World War I, when the French government's copper and bronze were being consumed by the war effort and official centimes had largely vanished from everyday transactions. Municipalities across France filled the gap with locally issued nécessité coinage, authorized informally and accepted by local merchants.
The El Monedero reference suggests at least two catalogued varieties for this denomination from Malakoff alone.
