Struck to commemorate the semicentennial of Belgian independence, declared in 1830 following the September Revolution that separated the southern provinces from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The piece was issued as part of a broader jubilee program under Leopold II, who used the occasion to project national cohesion at a moment when internal linguistic and political tensions between Flemish and Walloon factions were already sharpening.
