Additional information

Haiti's Duvalier-era small coinage continued largely uninterrupted through the early years of François "Papa Doc" Duvalier's dictatorship, which began in 1957 — the year before this type's introduction. The nickel brass alloy was a deliberate cost-cutting measure adopted by many Caribbean and Latin American states during the late 1950s as silver was progressively abandoned for everyday denominations.

The type ran through 1970, a year before Papa Doc's death, with his son Jean-Claude inheriting power and eventually overseeing coinage reforms of his own.
