Waterlow & Sons held the contract for much of Uruguay's early paper currency, and this 10 Centésimos sits within that long working relationship. What makes the denomination notable is how small it is for a banknote — fractional paper currency of this type was issued because Uruguay's coin supply in the 1880s was chronically insufficient for everyday retail transactions, a problem common across Latin America during this period of monetary reorganization.
The Banco Nacional itself had a short institutional life, operating only until the financial crisis of 1890 brought down several of Uruguay's private banks of issue.
