This issue belongs to the Nueva Familia Monetaria series introduced as Uruguay attempted to stabilize an economy ravaged by years of inflation that had, by the mid-1970s, made the old peso effectively worthless. The centésimo-denominated coinage was a statement of fiscal optimism under the military government that had seized power in 1973 — optimism that proved short-lived, as inflation returned aggressively before the series was even complete.
