| Obverse description | The Brazilian state emblem occupies the central field, depicting a five-pointed star enclosing a circle within which the Southern Cross constellation appears. The central device is encircled by a ring of 27 smaller stars representing the states of the federation, flanked on either side by branches of tobacco and coffee plant. The legend REPUBLICA FEDERATIVA DO BRASIL arcs along the upper periphery, while the date of the proclamation of the Republic, 15 de Novembro de 1889, appears along the lower portion. Brazil's mid-1980s coinage reform was driven by the Cruzado Plan of February 1986, in which the military-era cruzeiro was replaced at 1,000-to-1 by the cruzado in an attempt to break chronic inflation. Trial pieces from this transitional period were struck to test planchet specifications and vending machine tolerances before full production authorization — which explains why stainless steel, rather than the aluminum-bronze used in earlier small denominations, was evaluated for this value.
