Inscriptions across the face identify the issuing branch, denomination, and date of issue in period typography. Bradbury, Wilkinson printed this note for the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, the Portuguese colonial bank that held exclusive note-issuing rights across Portugal's overseas territories. The distinction between seal types I and II — a cataloguer's refinement rather than a change visible to everyday users — reflects different authorization stamps applied at different points in the note's administrative life, a common complication in BNU issues of this period.
At ten centavos, this was fractional emergency currency, filling the coin shortage that disrupted Portuguese colonial circulation during the First World War.
