Portugal struck proof trial pieces (provas) for its African colonies during the early 1940s as part of a broader currency standardization effort under the Estado Novo regime. The 1942 Mozambique issues were produced in Lisbon before any circulation coinage was authorized, making them administrative artifacts as much as coins — struck to demonstrate intended specifications to colonial treasury officials rather than for any monetary function.
Surviving examples are vanishingly rare, as provas were produced in minimal quantities and rarely left official hands.
