Brazil's chronic inflation through the mid-1960s regularly outpaced the government's ability to print new denominations quickly enough. Rather than wait for a fresh print run, the Banco Central authorized the overprinting of existing Cruzeiro notes — in this case, P#180 — with new Cruzeiro Novo values following the monetary reform of February 1967, which lopped three zeros off the old currency at a rate of 1,000 Cruzeiros to 1 Cruzeiro Novo.
The overprint itself was applied by Thomas De La Rue in London, on stock already printed for the previous series. Overprint legibility varies noticeably across the run.
