Obverse description A defiant condor, wings partially spread, perches in left profile atop a rocky outcrop at center, rendered in fine relief in the style of engraver Louis-Oscar Roty. The bird's plumage is meticulously detailed, with individual feathers visible on the wings and body. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE arcs around the upper periphery, with the engraver's signature O. Roty appearing in small characters. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded inner rim.

Additional information

The "no number on obverse" variety of the 1896 Chilean 10 centavos distinguishes KM#156.1 from its numbered counterpart, a die difference resulting from the transitional period following Chile's monetary reforms of the early 1890s. The War of the Pacific had drained silver reserves and destabilized the currency through the late 1880s, and Chile's subsequent return to a regulated silver coinage involved repeated design adjustments at the Santiago mint — inconsistencies in hub preparation account for the presence and absence of the denomination numeral on the obverse across otherwise identical dies.
