José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva — the "Patriarch of Independence" — had been dead for over a century when his portrait was placed on this series, part of a broader Vargas-era redesign of Brazilian coinage that assigned historical figures to denominations by prestige. The aluminium bronze alloy was a deliberate postwar choice: nickel had been diverted to military use during the war, and Brazil's mint adapted accordingly, settling on this composition for small denominations through the early 1950s.
The series ran through 1955 without major revision to the dies.
