Additional information

Peru issued this piece in 1954 to mark the centenary of the abolition of slavery under President Ramón Castilla, who signed the emancipation decree on December 3, 1854 — funded, with considerable irony, by revenue from guano exports worked in part by Chinese indentured laborers. Castilla also abolished indigenous tribute the same year, consolidating two sweeping reforms under a single political maneuver during his second presidency.
