The 1952 commemorative series marking Cuba's semicentennial was issued under Fulgencio Batista, who had returned to power via coup just months earlier in March of that year. The timing was not incidental — Batista used the anniversary to project legitimacy onto a government that had taken office by force, and the commemorative coinage was part of a broader program of ceremonial statecraft designed to anchor his regime to the founding of the republic in 1902.
The silver content kept these pieces from circulating heavily, and survivors in problem-free condition are more common than the political chaos of the period might suggest.
