Nicaragua's córdoba coinage was overhauled in the late 1990s following decades of monetary chaos — the country had burned through multiple currency redenominations since the 1980s Sandinista hyperinflation, at one point issuing the "córdoba oro" as a stabilization measure before eventually returning to standard córdoba issues. This 2002 brass-plated steel piece belongs to the consolidated series that followed, minted once the Banco Central had reestablished enough institutional credibility to justify a long-term circulating coinage program.
