Nicaragua's córdoba underwent a brutal devaluation through the 1980s under Sandinista economic policy, losing so much value that the government eventually redenominated entirely, introducing the "gold córdoba" in 1990 at a rate of five million old córdobas to one. This 1994 issue belongs to the stabilization coinage that followed — chromium-plated steel replacing the precious and base metal compositions of earlier decades as the Banco Central worked to keep production costs below face value.
