Bolivia redenominated its currency in 1987, replacing the peso boliviano at a rate of one million to one after inflation had rendered small denominations functionally worthless. This coin entered circulation as part of that reset — the new boliviano system's smallest practical unit at the time of introduction.
The stainless steel composition was a deliberate austerity choice, consistent with IMF-guided fiscal reforms Bolivia adopted mid-decade under the New Economic Policy of 1985.
