By 1983, Argentina's peso had been so ravaged by inflation that aluminum became the only economically defensible metal for minor coinage. The country was simultaneously exiting the Falklands War debacle and the final phase of military dictatorship — the centavo, technically still legal tender, was functionally worthless in daily transactions within months of issue.
