The denomination 10 CENTAVOS arcs along the left periphery and the weight designation 2 1/2 GRAMOS arcs along the right periphery, each flanked by small five-pointed stars. The date appears in the lower exergue, with an additional pair of small stars at the lower left and lower right of the portrait. The design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

This short series coincided with the tail end of Joaquín Balaguer's first extended presidency and the subsequent transition to Antonio Guzmán Fernández in 1978 — the Dominican Republic's first peaceful democratic transfer of power in decades. The Banco Central had been working to rationalize the coinage system through the 1970s, and the shift to copper-nickel for smaller denominations reflected both regional trends and the rising cost of silver on world markets following the commodity surge of that decade.
