By 1975, Peru was three years into the government of General Francisco Morales Bermúdez, who had displaced Velasco Alvarado in a bloodless coup. The sol was deteriorating steadily under inflation driven by failed agrarian reform and nationalization programs — a trajectory that would eventually require a complete currency redenomination in 1985, when the inti replaced the sol at 1,000 to one.
