Guatemala's coinage underwent a compositional shift in the early 1970s as rising silver prices forced mint authorities across Latin America to abandon traditional alloys. This nickel brass formula — the same broadly adopted by several regional mints during this period — was a direct response to commodity pressures rather than any domestic monetary reform.
