Issued under Portuguese colonial administration, this coin was part of a standardized bronze series introduced across multiple African territories in the late colonial period as Lisbon attempted to assert economic coherence over its overseas provinces — a designation Portugal preferred to "colonies" following constitutional revisions in 1951. São Tomé and Príncipe's tiny domestic economy, built almost entirely on cocoa exports from roças, meant circulating coinage often sat idle or was displaced by barter and plantation-credit systems.
