The Commonwealth-era Philippine coinage was authorized under the 1903 Coinage Act framework but redesigned following the establishment of the Commonwealth in 1935, with the new types introduced partly to signal political transition toward the promised independence of 1946. Production shifted dramatically after the Japanese invasion of December 1941 — the Manila Mint, which had operated since 1920, was seized, and a significant quantity of unissued coins and bullion was dumped into Cabcaben Bay to prevent capture. Some of that silver was later recovered by Japanese salvage operations.
The 1944-D and 1945-D issues were struck at Denver during the occupation years.
