Comments

The Banco Nacional Ultramarino issued this note for Portuguese Guinea, one of several small-denomination paper issues produced around 1920 to address a chronic shortage of metallic small change across Portugal's African territories. The shift away from coin for fractional values was a practical response to wartime metal scarcity that outlasted the war itself in the colonial periphery.

Pick 51 is among the scarcer BNU Guinea issues of this period — the low face value meant heavy handling and rapid destruction in circulation.
