The Banco de Antioquia was one of Colombia's private departmental banks operating under the 1880s free-banking legislation that allowed regional institutions to issue their own currency. By 1900, that system was collapsing under the weight of the Thousand Days' War — a brutal civil conflict that began in October 1899 and devastated the country's monetary infrastructure. Low-denomination fractional notes like this one filled the vacuum left by disappearing coin, particularly in Antioquia, where commerce continued despite the war.
Tipografía Central was a local Medellín press, not a specialist security printer. The limitations of that show.
