Bradbury Wilkinson produced this note at a moment when Argentina's monetary system was still recovering from the catastrophic Baring Crisis of 1890, which had brought the country to the edge of sovereign default and forced a complete restructuring of its banking sector. The Banco de la Nación Argentina itself was created in 1891 specifically to replace the failed Banco Nacional — this fractional note belongs to one of the institution's earliest issued series.

Small-denomination fractional paper in this period was largely a stopgap against the chronic shortage of coin in everyday commerce. Most 10-centavo notes were handled to destruction.
