Nicaragua's earliest silver coinage was struck under contract at the Philadelphia Mint, where the young republic lacked domestic minting infrastructure entirely. The 1880 issues represent the first standardized decimal coinage for the country following years of monetary fragmentation inherited from the Central American Federation's collapse.
KM#3 is occasionally found with weak central strikes — a documented characteristic of this contract issue, not a grading variable.
