The Banco Nacional de la República de Colombia was a state-run institution established in 1880 under Rafael Núñez, whose centralist economic reforms were deeply controversial and faced sustained opposition from federalist factions and private banking interests. This fractional note — denominated in reales at a moment when Colombia was still working through the transition from the old peso of 8 reales — reflects the monetary confusion of a country mid-conversion, issuing paper in denominations that straddled two systems simultaneously.
ABNC's involvement was standard for Colombian federal issues of this period. The ink stamp security feature is characteristically minimal for fractional values.
