Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Amersfoort was a German SS-run transit and punishment camp operating on Dutch soil from 1941. The camp scrip issued in 1944 was not a monetary instrument in any meaningful sense — it was a control mechanism, restricting prisoner purchasing to the camp canteen and ensuring that any outside money confiscated on arrival could never be recovered. The system had more to do with humiliation and administrative control than economics.
S&B 1091 is among the more primitively produced pieces in the category of Second World War camp currency — locally printed under improvised conditions, with no pretense of the engraved formality seen in Theresienstadt or Buchenwald scrip.
