Additional information

Vatican coinage in 2012 was issued under the sede vacante provisions following no papal death — Benedict XVI was still reigning — making this a straightforward annual issue rather than the rarer interregnum type that collectors specifically target. The Vatican Governorate contracts production entirely to the Italian State Mint in Rome, and annual sets from this period were struck in tightly controlled quantities sold directly through the Vatican philatelic and numismatic office, with virtually none entering general circulation.
