Ghana redenominated its currency in 1965, then again faced severe inflationary pressure through the 1970s and 1980s under successive military governments, steadily eroding the cedi's purchasing power. By 1991, 10 cedis bought almost nothing — the coin was a denomination kept alive largely by institutional inertia. The switch to nickel clad steel from earlier compositions reflects the mint's response to rising metal costs relative to face value.
