| Obverse description | Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform order around the central square hole, reading top, right, bottom, left: 咸 (Xian), 豐 (Feng), 重 (Zhong), 寶 (Bao). The characters are bold and deeply cast in high relief against a flat field, enclosed within a raised inner square rim surrounding the perforation and an outer raised rim defining the coin's edge. The legend reads 咸豐重寶 (Xianfeng Zhongbao), identifying the coin as a 'heavy currency' issue of the Xianfeng Emperor's reign. The overall composition follows classical Chinese cash coin conventions, with no additional decorative elements in the field. |
