Obverse description The obverse presents four Chinese ideograms in standard regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform reading order around a central square perforation: 咸 (Xian) above, 豐 (Feng) to the right, 重 (Zhong) to the left, and 寶 (Bao) below. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within a plain inner square border, surrounded by a plain outer rim. The inscription reads 咸豐重寶 (Xianfeng Zhongbao), identifying the reign period of the Xianfeng Emperor (r. 1850–1861) and denoting the coin as 'heavy currency.' The field between the inner and outer borders is smooth and unadorned.
