The four-character reign inscription 咸豐重寶 (Xianfeng Zhongbao) is arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-bottom-right-left in regular script (kaishu). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat, unadorned field, with no inner or outer rim decoration beyond a plain raised border. The style is consistent with large-denomination Xianfeng-era cash coinage produced at the Board of Revenue Mint. |

The Xianfeng reign saw the Qing monetary system buckle under the financial strain of the Taiping Rebellion, which by 1853 had captured Nanjing and was draining imperial revenues at a rate the existing copper cash supply could not support. The Board of Revenue Mint responded by issuing increasingly large-denomination cash — this 10 cash piece among them — debased in copper content and inflated far beyond their intrinsic value. Brass crept in as copper grew scarce.
The Baoquan Bureau produced multiple denomination tiers simultaneously during these years, and quality control was inconsistent. Hartill 22.899 is a relatively common survivor of what was, in practice, an emergency monetary measure.
