Obverse description Cast copper cash coin centered on a square perforation, surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left, forming the reign title legend 咸豐通寶 (Xianfeng Tongbao, meaning 'Xianfeng currency'). The characters are raised in relief against a flat field, enclosed within a plain inner rim and a raised outer rim. The surfaces show characteristic casting texture with areas of green cuprite patination.
