| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by a raised inner rim and broad flat field. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 天 (Tian) above, 啓 (Qi) to the right, 通 (Tong) below, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, forming the reign-title inscription 'Tianqi Tongbao' (Heavenly Opening, Universal Currency). Characters are bold and deeply cast within a plain field bounded by raised inner and outer rims. |
