The upper character 聖 (Sheng, meaning 'Sacred') is placed above the aperture, and the lower character 寶 (Bao, meaning 'Currency' or 'Treasure') appears below it. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief, consistent with the robust style of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom issues. A plain, raised rim borders the flat field. The middle stroke of 聖 is long, identifying this piece as Hartill 23.3. |
