The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom was not a dynasty minting coins for prestige — it was a millenarian Christian insurgency that held Nanjing for eleven years and may have caused more deaths than any conflict before the twentieth century. These cash pieces were produced during the movement's administrative peak, when Hong Xiuquan's government was running a functioning bureaucracy, issuing edicts, and collecting taxes across a substantial portion of southern and central China. The horizontal character orientation in the reverse inscription — distinguishing Hartill 23.16 from the vertical variant — reflects deliberate workshop differentiation rather than error.
