| 正面描述 | Cast iron cash coin of the Northern Song Dynasty, featuring four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform order around a central square perforation, reading clockwise in the cursive running script (xingshu) style: 聖 (top), 宋 (right), 元 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend 'Sheng Song Yuan Bao' (Holy Song Original Currency). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat inner field, framed by a raised inner rim encircling the square hole and an outer raised rim at the coin's periphery. The calligraphic style is characteristic of the imperial brush-written inscriptions commissioned during the reign of Emperor Huizong's predecessor. The overall type is consistent with Hartill 16.396, the large-character variety in which the top horizontal stroke of 寶 extends above the level of the square hole. |
