Obverse description Cast iron cash coin of the Northern Song Dynasty, featuring four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform order around a central square perforation, reading clockwise in the cursive running script (xingshu) style: 聖 (top), 宋 (right), 元 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend 'Sheng Song Yuan Bao' (Holy Song Original Currency). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat inner field, framed by a raised inner rim encircling the square hole and an outer raised rim at the coin's periphery. The calligraphic style is characteristic of the imperial brush-written inscriptions commissioned during the reign of Emperor Huizong's predecessor. The overall type is consistent with Hartill 16.396, the large-character variety in which the top horizontal stroke of 寶 extends above the level of the square hole.
Obverse script Chinese (traditional, running script)

Reverse description Reverse is entirely plain and uninscribed, displaying only the raised inner rim surrounding the central square perforation and the outer raised rim at the edge, with no mint marks, symbols, or legends present in the flat field. This uniface treatment is typical of Song Dynasty iron cash issues produced at multiple provincial mints during the Jianzhong Jingguo and Chongning reign periods.
