Qixiang was the reign title chosen for the young Zaichun upon the death of the Xianfeng Emperor in August 1861 — but it was used for less than two months. A power struggle led by Empress Dowagers Cixi and Ci'an, in the coup known as the Xinyou Incident, overthrew the regency council and suppressed the Qixiang era entirely. The reign title was replaced by Tongzhi before any substantial coinage reached circulation, making issues from this mint among the briefest-lived of the entire Qing series.
