Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by four raised Chinese characters arranged in the traditional cruciform layout reading clockwise from the top: 民 (Mín), 通 (Tōng), 寶 (Bǎo), 國 (Guó), together forming the legend 民國通寶 (Minguo Tongbao, meaning 'Currency of the Republic'). The characters are rendered in a bold, slightly archaic script style consistent with early Republican-era cash coin production. The field between the characters and the outer rim is plain, with a raised circular border enclosing the design. The coin follows the traditional Chinese cash coin format adapted for the newly established Republic of China.
