Obverse description Four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, read in the traditional manner: top, bottom, right, left — rendering the inscription 洪武通寶 (Hóngwǔ Tōngbǎo). The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within a plain raised rim, with each character occupying one quadrant relative to the central perforation. The field between the rim and the characters is flat and unadorned. The overall style is consistent with official Ming dynasty cast coinage.
