Obverse description Cast brass cash coin centered on a square central hole, around which four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain raised rim. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the legend reads 光緒重寶 (Guangxu Zhongbao), identifying the reign period of the Guangxu Emperor and the denomination class 'Zhongbao' (重寶, meaning 'Precious Currency'). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat recessed field, with no additional decorative elements. The broad flat rim encircles the inscription and provides a clean border typical of late Qing dynasty Board of Revenue issues.
