A mule combining obverse and reverse dies from different coin types — in this case almost certainly the product of a hurried or careless die pairing at the Guangzhou (Canton) mint during a period when the Qing provincial minting system was under serious strain. By 1906, Kwangtung was operating under pressure to consolidate production toward the newly standardized Board of Revenue coinage, and die management across provincial facilities was inconsistent at best. Mules from this period are generally the result of workshop error rather than any deliberate issue.
